Industry: IFJ insists on safety for journalists in Iraq

By Nergish Sunavala

The International Federation of Journalists calls for better protection of reporters in Iraq. The IFJ urged the U.N Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, to issue a statement in support of the Iraqi Union of Journalists. The death of the President of the IUJ, Shihab Al-Timimi, has resulted in this mass outcry. The IFJ has resolved to put more pressure on the Iraqi Prime Minister, Al-Maliki, to defend the independent media. They are demanding that the government find and prosecute those who are guilty of targeting media workers. Photo is Shihab Al-Timimi by Adil al-Khazali © 2008 The Associated Press.
